A Mid Century Modern Mood

Home Remodel in Berkeley

Built in 1955 and set high in the Berkeley Hills, this home presented an opportunity to rethink its interior layout while honoring its setting and views. The original floor plan separated the kitchen, dining, and living areas into three enclosed rooms. By removing interior walls on the main level, the space was reconfigured into a unified great room that now fully engages the surrounding landscape, including views toward San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. The remodel included new sand-in-place white oak flooring with a custom stain, upgraded electrical and lighting throughout, and the installation of LaCantina bifold doors to strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. A concrete island anchors the kitchen, complemented by integrated appliances and a built-in coffee system selected to support daily routines. Beyond the interior, the project also included roof, gutter, and downspout replacement to ensure long-term performance. The result is a cohesive transformation that balances openness, function, and careful execution.
